(Text 1)

W:How’s your mother now? I heard she had an operation last week.

M:She is much better. Thank you. But she still needs to stay there for, two more weeks.

(Text 2)

M:Excuse me. Could you tell me the library hours?

W: Sure. We open at 8:30 a.m. and we don’t close till 7:00 p.m. except on Sundays when we close at 5:30.

(Text 3)

W: We haven’t seen much of you lately in the company. Have you been away on business?

M: No, I’ve been away on holiday. I’ve got a cousin in Canada.

(Text 4)

M: Which attract you more, the red one or the blue one?

W: I must say I have a preference for the blue ones. They look pretty, don’t they?

M: Yes, really. But they make your feet look big, and they don’t match your coat and trousers.

(Text 5)

M: Professor Stansfield, I’ve decided to drop my biology class. It just meets too early in the morning for me.

W: Do you really think that’s a good reason, Mark?

(Text 6)

W: How are you?

M: I’m OK. And you, Carol?

W: Oh, busy. I’ve been working on those books for ages.

M: Me, too. Have you finished reading the books?

W: I haven’t. And I’m so worried. What about you?

M: I already have. But writing is going so slowly. I feel like I have to read all the books again. I’m so forgetful.

W: Really? Well, eh, what are you going to do after you’re finished?

M: I don’t know. I hope I can go to the countryside and relax.

(Text 7)

W: Max, I need your help. Gary is sick. Will you fill in for him?

M: I might be able to do that …

W: Great! We have a meeting this afternoon. It’s at three in my office. You’ll be able to make it, right?

M: It’s possible I’ll be able to come…

W: Oh, and do you still have that book about office rules? We’ll need to look at that during the meeting, so bring it.

M: I might still have it…

W: You don’t seem very confident. You are going to be there this afternoon, aren’t you?

M: I don’t think I can say that for sure.

(Text 8)

W: Excuse me! Are you Mr. Johnson?

M: Yes, I am.

W: How do you do, Mr. Johnson? I’m Amy, the sales manager of ABC company. I came to pick you up and drive you to your hotel.

M: Thank you very much. You are very kind.

W: How was your trip?

M: Not very good, I’m afraid. I got airsick.

W: Do you feel better now?

M: Yes, but I feel very tired because it was a long trip.

W: Well, let’s get you to your hotel. Our car is in the parking lot.

M: Ok… Amy, the airport looks different from the last time I was here.

W: Yes. In the past two years, the airport has expanded quite a lot. You’ll see more changes else where.

(Text 9)

M: Hey, I just finished reading a great book. It’s about Steve Jobs!

W: Really? But there are so many books about him now. What makes the one you read special?

M: Well, the one I read is by Walter Isaacson---it’s different from the others because Steve Jobs himself asked Walter to write it.

W: Hmm, were they friends or something?

M:Well, they knew each other well because Walter used to write about Apple products---but it was mostly business relationship, I think.

W: So, what’s the book about?

M: Oh, his entire life. There’s a lot personal information about Steven Jobs because so many people, including his wife, kids and closest friends, agreed to be interviewed only for this particular book

W: It sounds interesting. Did you learn anything that really surprised you?

M: I always knew he was a strong person, but I was amazed at how sensitive he was. He actually cries a lot in the book.

W: Really? Wow, I should take a look.

(Text 10)

W: It’s really crazy how Kate and I became friends. About two years ago, I was on a plane from New York to Los Angeles for work. Then I met Kate--- the woman sitting next to me. We talked the entire trip. But Unfortunately, the flight had been delayed in New York by bad weather, and when we got to Los Angeles, she found she had missed her next flight to Monterey. So I invited her to stay with me in my hotel in Los Angeles, but the airline had already promised to give her a room at the airport hotel, and she had to catch a really early flight the next day. We talked and talked until her hotel bus came, but as her bus drove away, I forgotten to get her telephone number! Well, three months later, one of my friends had many people over for a party and I started talking to a woman named Susan there. She told me she had just got married a few months ago in Monterey. I remember Kate said she was going to a roommate’s wedding in Monterey, so I asked her if she had a roommate in college named Kate. She was very surprised and said she had. Then I told her all about meeting Kate on the plane. From Susan I got in touch with Kate, and we’re all good friends now.
