1. M: Have you finished your homework, Jane?
W: Not yet. The temperature is so low that my hands are freezing.
2. W: How quickly can you get me to the airport?
M: It’s a thirty-minute drive on the highway, but I know a shortcut that will get us there in twenty minutes.
3. M: You make me feel really envious, Ella. You seem to have been everywhere.
W: Yes, I have visited several countries, such as Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and recently I’ve been to West Africa.
4. W: Could you possibly come home earlier today, Bill? We need to buy some vegetables for dinner.
M: I’m sorry. I have planned to get a haircut on my way and then I have to attend a party.
5. W: Hello! Red Star Hotel. What can I do for you?
M: Hello! Could I speak to the manager, please? I want to learn about the position advertised in today’s newspaper.
W: Certainly. But wait for a while; he’s just answering another call in the next room.
6. W: Is this shop selling things for dogs?
M: Yes, madam. What can I do for you?
W: I want to buy a coat for my pet. He is white and he has big eyes. I can’t decide what color and size is OK.
M: I suggest you bring him here so that we can choose a good one for him.
W: You’re right, but I won’t do that.
M: Why not?
W: It will be a present for his birthday. I won’t let him see it until his birthday party.
7. M: You’ve attended the lecture, haven’t you?
W: Yes, and I’m very interested in it.
M: What is it about?
W: Professor Smith gave us a lecture. It was about the energy problem.
M: One of the hot topics of society. Do you believe there will be any energy problems in the future?
W: Yes, very serious ones. The professor said in the very near future oil and coal will be exhausted.
M: Really? So serious?
W: I think it’s reasonable.
M: Then are there any solutions according to Professor Smith?
W: She provided several means. But she thought the most important one was to treasure the energy left.
M: But I think we should also find some kinds of new energy.
8. M: Hello, Jane! Where have you been?
W: Hello, Richard! I’ve been downtown and I saw just what I wanted.
M: Is that green dress to match the green shoes you bought yesterday?
W: No. Not a green dress. It isn’t anything for me. It’s for our house.
M: Our house? What is it?
W: You’ll never guess. It’s a new sofa. A yellow one.
M: We already have a sofa, Jane. A very good one.
W: I never liked it. It’s brown and our other furniture is light blue. They don’t match. The yellow one will look good with our other things.
M: Very well. Is the new sofa wider or narrower?
W: It’s actually a little bit wider than our old sofa, but it looks narrower because it’s longer.
M: Fine. Then I’ll have a very good place to sleep after dinner.
9. M: Now, where am I staying in Barcelona?
W: I’ve booked the Sky Palace for you, just at the airport terminal.
M: Sky Palace? Wasn’t it possible to get me into Barcelona Hotel as usual?
W: Well, Barcelona Hotel would have involved much more travelling for you. The company you’re visiting is located near the airport.
M: Oh, I see. Yes, fine. Have you got the hotel phone number?
W: Yes, I’ve got it for you from the travel agency. And at the next stop, you’ve been booked into the Larval Hotel in Brussels.
M: The Larval? I’ve already stayed there twice and found it rather depressing. Is it possible to change the hotel?
W: Of course, I’ll do my best. Oh, the last stop, London.
M: OK. When everything is settled, I’ll ask my wife to meet me at the Heathrow Airport. Is there anything else?
W: If possible, I’ll ask them to send the tickets up before we get off work today. That’s all in order now.
10. Are you the first or the last child in your family, or are you a middle or only child? Some people say that the oldest child is smart and strong-willed, and he or she is very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child. They give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is very likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention. So they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child then often gets special treatment. Often this child grows up funny and charming.
Do you believe this idea about birth order, too? A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in a family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they often did better in life.
